Sam Walton

(March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992)
Pioneer Retailer

A child of the depression, Sam Walton came from humble and hard-working roots. As a pioneering retailer, he made the discount shopping store a phenomenal success in America.

Walton began his retail career in 1940. He and his brother opened the first Wal-Mart discount store in 1962 in Arkansas.

Cutting costs to absolute maximum and passing the saving onto the customer, along with advanced computerization, and automated distribution centers, became the key to success of Wal-Mart. Stores opened across the country and Wal-Mart became the world's largest retailer in 1991.

Today, Sam Walton's empire has grown over 3,000 stores with sales over $104 billion. His enterprising and innovative dream continues to grow.
